You should have an undergraduate degree of at least second class standard in a relevant/related subject, such as Game Design/Programming or Computer Science. Linear algebra for games with applications to 2D and 3D graphics, procedural generation of assets (L-systems), complex algebra and applications . You can see some of the games and projects our students worked on as part of their studies on the GamesAtGold page on itch.io. You should have an undergraduate degree of at least second class standard in a relevant/related subject, such as Game Design/Development, Art, Design, 3D Modelling, Animation or Computer Science. From basic design tools to conceptualising, prototyping and play testing an array of games, this module will teach you how to create compelling game mechanics within playable experiences.
Students will be able to show their modelled work as a turntable animation using different rendering techniques. This module focuses on the principles, methods, techniques and tools commonly used in the early analysis and design stages of the software development life cycle. Students work in teams on a software design project, in which they build application prototypes. His main area of interest is games design, mobile games development, games production, business issues, marketing, user experience and user interface design.
Students are guided through the process of developing their own non-digital games, from initial concept, through prototyping and playtesting, to a final design. This module aims to prepare students for conducting an independent research project leading to a dissertation and to provide them with an appreciation of research and business skills related to their professional career. This module adds game-specific techniques and material to the general-purpose programming abilities acquired previously. Topics include fundamental game classes and loops; working with 2D graphics, images and sound; collision detection, Game AI, particle effects, procedural content generation, physics engines and more. Students showcase their programming skills and creative flair by designing and implementing a 2D video game. The aim of this module is to provide students with an introduction to the principles and technology that underlie internet applications and the techniques used in the design and construction of web sites.
The Foundation Year provides an opportunity to build up your academic writing skills and numeracy, and will also cover a range of subject specific content to fully prepare you for entry to an Undergraduate degree. Learn to playtest games and use game-specific techniques such as expert heuristic evaluation for playability, focus groups and data analytics to iteratively refine and improve your designs for better gaming experiences. Develop game code for a variety of platforms (e.g. PC, console, mobile, web…) and to experiment with emerging technologies to enhance your skills and employability in working on the cutting edge of games programming. The course follows a hands-on practical approach, where you will work on a number of games and related creative technology projects over the duration.
- Students also have the opportunity to explore the technical side of facial motion capture.
- The purpose of the module is to enable you to undertake a sustained, in-depth and research-informed project exploring an area that is of personal interest to you.
- Our other international applicants or independent applicants in the UK can also apply online through UCAS Apply.
- We are looking for breadth and depth in your current studies and enthusiasm for the subject you wish to study.
- Applicants will typically be required to pass the Ensino Secundário Complementar with grade 3.0, to include any essential subject at grade 3.
- Level 4, you’ll learn about the reverse engineering of current games, level design based on the principles of architecture and games design documentation.
Free access to LinkedIn Learning, which offers over 5,000 in-depth and bite-sized courses. This course also provides free access to Pluralsight, which offers a wealth of courses, guides and tutorials aligned to the digital creative industry. International students who cannot meet the direct entry requirements can begin their degree studies at Birmingham City University International College . This allows you to spend a whole year with an employer, between the second and third years of your degree, and is a great way to find out more about your chosen career.

Students will learn how to use modelling software to create a range of 3D rigid body assets varying from buildings to vehicles to household objects to vegetation to roads and terrain, etc. Lighting and texturing will be taught as well as simple rigging and animation workflows. If you are more interested in developing game-related technical skills such as advanced programming, mathematics, Artificial Intelligence , and shader coding, you may want to read about our MSc Computer Games Programming. Dr Diego Perez-Liebana Senior Lecturer Dr Perez-Liebana’s research is centred in the application of artificial intelligence to games, reinforcement learning and evolutionary computation.
Using professional techniques acquired through lectures, tutorials, seminars, and industry workshops, you will develop a portfolio of industry standard work. Explore graphics, animation, concept art, 3D modelling, interactive design, player psychology and multiplayer. Engage with the thriving games sector through live briefs, games conferences, end of year show and various field trips in the UK and abroad. Applicants will typically be required to pass the Attestato Di Maturità with an overall grade of 5.0, to include any essential subject at grade 5.
