Introduction to Securityis designed to introduce you to the key concepts in information security and computer forensics. Society depends increasingly on computer systems; the systems are accessible from the internet, therefore increasing the risk to system integrity. Furthermore, the growth of social networking systems and e-commerce means that personal data is also at risk. It is therefore essential that internet users have a sound understanding of the risks involved, together with preventative and recovery measures. Security is a complex topic and this module provides an understanding of the context and overall security issues that apply in the use of networked computer systems from a perspective of personal data.

The principles underpinning of real-time hardware and software are also addressed and deployed. Queen’s actively encourages this type of activity by offering students an additional qualification, the Degree Plus Award . Degree Plus accredits wider experiential and skill development gained through extra-curricular activities that promote the enhancement of academic, career management, personal and employability skills in a variety of contexts. As part of the Award, students are also trained on how to reflect on the experience and make the link between academic achievement, extracurricular activities, transferable skills and graduate employment. Participating students will also be trained in how to reflect on their skills and experiences and can gain an understanding of how to articulate the significance of these to others, e.g. employers.

Computer Engineering

There is no compulsory purchase of equipment or books necessary for this course. Lecture notes will be provided by staff, and you will be given a generous printing allowance. Evaluate system & component performance through a variety of analytical techniques including computational methods and modelling.

We’ve learned a lot about how to give you a quality education – we aim to combine the best of our in-person teaching and learning with access to online learning and digital resources which put you more in charge of when and how you study. Our fully equipped, state-of-the-art labs gives you access to digital, high-end networks, cloud computing, processing and developmental resources. Our labs are equipped with Cisco units, Blade servers, industry standard telecom equipment and high-end simulation software.

Studying on a full-time basis, you will be required to attend classes for up to four days a week. This degree is also available as a 4-year programme with an integrated foundation year. If you’ve received an offer to study with us, we’ll invite you to one of our applicant days, which take place between November and April. These applicant days have a strong department focus and give you the chance to really explore student life here, even if you’ve visited us before. In your first and second year all your labs will be held in the Diamond where you will use industry grade equipment and have lab sessions in the dedicated teaching clean room.

Up to 10 hours will consist of practical sessions, taking part in experiments and project work in our state-of-the-art labs. Our degrees are professionally accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology on behalf of the Engineering Council.

Professor Huan Nguyen is a Professor in Digital Communications and Networks with a vast experience in state-of-the-art Digital Twin Modelling, Disaster Recovery Communication Networks and Machine-type communications in 5G. You can apply to spend 9 to 12 months working in any organisation in the world, and receive University support from our dedicated team to secure your dream placement. You’ll also have the option to undertake a work placement between Stages 2 and 3, allowing you to put your learning into practice and develop your professional expertise. Throughout the degree you will develop skills in Java, C and Python and will gain experience programming microcontrollers and computers, such as the Arduino and Raspberry Pi.
