The aim is to enable the student to design a computer system using a hardware description language. Specific focus would be on field programmable gate array implementation, which includes synthesis, testing and verification. An additional aim for the student is to learn complex system design techniques including architecting for speed and area. This module aims to provide a fundamental knowledge of computer communications and network architecture from the user’s point of view. It aims to give an overall understanding of the issues and constraints involved in wired and wireless communication systems.
Students will learn a range of practical skills, and techniques required to construct digital electronic circuits successfully and to use a range of tools to accomplish this. The projects will require you to develop and use a variety of problem-solving skills and to utilise knowledge gained from other taught modules. The combination of electronic engineering skills with advanced knowledge of computer hardware and software engineering prepare you for creating the systems of the future.
Our course will give you with the required engineering expertise for either a career in industry or in a variety of other professions. You can gain extra skills by signing up for one of our Kent Extra activities, such as learning a language or volunteering. Ability to manage time and resources within an individual project and a group project. Ability to design hardware or software systems to fulfil a product specification and devise tests to appraise performance. Ability to identify, classify and describe the performance of systems and components through the use of analytical methods and modelling techniques with an emphasis on simulation and practical learning .
The research group is centred at the Department of Engineering Science and has connections to many other research groups across in the United Kingdom and internationally, and we are also closely linked to industry. For over 30 years, our BEng and MEng courses in Engineering have been accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology , which enables fast-track career progression as a professional engineer. Awareness of the nature of intellectual property and contractual issues and an understanding of appropriate codes of practice and industry standards .

All of our full-time undergraduate courses involve work-based learning – this could be through placements, live briefs and guest lectures. Many of these opportunities are provided by local businesses and organisations. Further tuition fees are payable for each subsequent year of study and are subject to an annual increase of no more than 5% or RPI .
Examples include using programmable devices to design new data driven accelerator platforms, building high-performance networked-systems, improving power-efficiency in cloud computing, re-imagining server architectures, and more. If, in the future, the increases to regulated fees permitted by law or government policy exceed the rate of inflation, we reserve the right to increase fees to the maximum permitted level. If we intend to exercise this extended right to increase tuition fees, we will let you know by the end of June in the academic year before the one in which we intend to exercise that right.
