This is a practical module where the majority of a student’s time is spent working at a computer. Similarly, assessment is practically based with multiple choice tests to show they understand both basic and advanced theoretical techniques. Taught in common with CI5003 and cannot be taken if CI5003 has already been taken. This module teaches games programming with an emphasis on engines and middleware.

The team includes senior academics and professional practitioners with industry experience. Postgraduate research students who have undertaken teaching training may also contribute to the teaching of seminars under the supervision of the module leader. Level 4, you’ll learn about the reverse engineering of current games, level design based on the principles of architecture and games design documentation. You’ll gain a solid grounding in 3D modelling and you’ll begin to develop an understanding of 3D games engines. Your third year will see you become a senior member of the collaborative development team.

Ma Creative & Cultural Entrepreneurship: Computing Pathway

This is an optional module intended for undergraduate students who are studying computing-related subjects. HCI is the core academic discipline that examines the relationship and interface between human and computer. It informs and provides the theoretical and methodological foundation for user experience, the professional discipline which is practically applied. Although this module forms part of the user experience guided pathway it can be taken as a standalone module. This module is taken by all first year undergraduate students undertaking a degree in the computing subject area.

This module focuses on learning techniques to produce hard surface models such as weapons and vehicles. Students will produce a portfolio of weapon and vehicle assets to varying specifications and implement them into a games engine. In this module you will analyse current user interfaces and heads up displays being used in modern games and investigate the design process for menus, options and other elements of user interface design. You will then design and create a user interface for a specific game genre before implementing your design into a game engine. Students will work in a junior role in a team comprised of departments as in a games studio. They will work with other juniors and level 6 seniors to make a vertical slice of a game as either an artist, designer or tech/scripter.

Our Computer Games Design degree explores the creative and technical aspects of games production, giving you the necessary skills to develop, produce and publish games titles. Applicants will typically be required to complete the Studentsprogv at an overall grade of 10, to include any essential subject at Level A grade 7.

The most successful game was the game “Great American Punch” a Virtual Reality boxing game. Many of the games created in the game jam were then showcased at the PC Gamer Weekender in Kensington. This had a very positive write-up in the press as “one of the top five most impressive sights” at the event. Depending on the programme of study, there may be extra costs that are not covered by tuition fees which students will need to consider when planning their studies.

What You’ll Study

As well as focusing on the required programming the module also teaches the organisational skills required to work at a high level. The aim of this module is to provide an introduction to the C++ programming language. The contents covered by this module include basic concepts and features of C++ programming (e.g., operator overloading), C++ Standard Template Library, and inheritance, function overriding and exceptions. A standard undergraduate course will comprise of level 4, 5 and 6 modules – increasing as you progress through the course.
