Course Modules

This is achieved by investigating existing games and deconstructing mechanics and systems along with designing levels and creating testing strategies. Assignments are split into two semesters, the first focusing on level design and testing, the second on mechanic design and explanation. Students are taught from scratch how to design, develop and enhance their own game prototypes using rapid prototyping techniques, scripting and an industry standard game engine. You’ll have a wide range of options in your third year, giving you the opportunity to become a specialist in a diverse range of subjects. Areas you can explore to an advanced level include games design, 3D modelling, cinematic animation and AI scripting and prototyping.

This module aims to provide a strong theoretical and practical background necessary for you to build high quality scalable software and to operate effectively as an industry professional. It examines software quality concepts necessary to build high quality software architecture. The module introduces you to the concept of software architecture and architectural patterns as part of software design and reuse which can be viewed as components and interfaces. At a lower level, programming models and paradigms are explored, as well as design patterns and anti-patterns. Testing strategies and other software quality principles will also be covered, and you will explore these principles in the context of practical projects which expose you to industry tools, practices and management methodologies. The principles of animation are introduced and students will learn how to apply these principles to 3D computer animation.

Module Overview

Typical examples of final projects include designing and building a level of a complete ’first playable’ prototype game (or ’the vertical slice’) for PC, or consoles or mobile platforms, of a quality to be suitable to be shown to a publisher. Alternatively, the student may choose to create a tool or process suitable for games related workflow. This module is led by Richard Leinfellner; an industry veteran with 30 years of experience making commercially successful games.
